I have been diagnosed with DVT: Is it serious?

What is DVT?
Well DVT is a term used for Deep Venous Thrombosis, which means that the clots are blocking the blood channels in the body. Mostly the DVT refers to the blood channels in the thigh or lower leg.

Why do I have DVT?
Well, there are numerous causes of DVT. However, whatever the underlying cause may be, it occurs due to disruption in the following mechanisms,

  1. Sluggishness or stasis in blood flow
  2. Damage or inflammation to the blood vessels
  3. Immobility

Any of the above-mentioned factors may lead to the formation of blood clots in a person.

Is it serious?
Well, the blood channels in the body are connected. The Venous channels are those which takes blood towards the Heart, therefore, if the clots happen to dislodge and travel to the Heart, it will then be pumped to the blood channels in the lungs. And if it does so happen, it will lead to life-threatening consequences. Thus the treatment of DVT is necessary.

How is it treated?

There are various medications, named anticoagulants, which dissolve the clot in the blood and thus opening the blood passages.
